Ultra-finemagnetic particleremoval forstable RSS drilling

The MagBee magnetic separator is built for oil-based mud and deep shale drilling. Its custom Halbach closed magnetic circuit, high-gradient separation field and static inner magnetic system target magnetic and weakly magnetic particles in the critical 5-20μm range.

≥52,000 kA/m² effective gradient
5000-5600 Gs outer drum flux density
25-80 m³/h drilling fluid capacity

Why It Matters

Fine magnetic particles in drilling fluid directly impact RSS reliability

MagBee magnetic separator grey model

Harmful magnetic substances in drilling fluid mainly come from barite fines, hematite, magnetite debris and fine iron minerals in cuttings. Most particles fall in the 1-20μm range, causing wear, blockage and signal disturbance in RSS electronics, seals and bearings.

1-30μm High-risk ultra-fine range for RSS
<15% Typical removal of <30μm particles by conventional cleaners
42% RSS MTBF reduction when <15μm magnetic particles exceed 0.8%

Technology

A Halbach closed circuit concentrates magnetic energy where it works

↗

High-gradient capture

Effective gradient reaches ≥52,000 kA/m² with peaks above 80,000 kA/m², covering the 5-20μm risk window for RSS tools.

◎

One-sided magnetic utilization

The 3D closed magnetic circuit delivers >92% one-sided magnetic utilization and reduces leakage by 70%, creating higher working-side gradients with limited magnet volume.

⟳

Stable rotating outer drum

A fixed inner magnetic system carries the custom magnet pack while a 304 stainless outer drum rotates at an adjustable 0.5-3m/min line speed for high-density mud.

+

Pole-shoe upgrade

Optional pole shoes raise the gradient to 120,000-150,000 kA/m² for enhanced removal of sub-5μm particles.

Working Principle

Adsorb, lift, discharge and collect in one continuous process

As drilling fluid flows through the lower mud channel, the outer drum rotates counterclockwise. Ultra-fine magnetic particles are attracted to the drum surface and carried to the top non-magnetic discharge zone. With field strength below 50Gs in the discharge area, scrapers or high-pressure water can recover the particles with less secondary adsorption.

Static inner magnet system, no eddy-current loss Sealed IP66 structure for Zone 1 explosive environments Adjustable speed for high-density mud conditions

Field Data

From lab capture rate to continuous field operation

Eastern South China Sea deepwater platform

86.4%

After installing a 50m³/h MagBee separator, removal of 8-25μm magnetic particles rose from 11% to 86.4%. RSS failure interval increased from 98h to 410h, saving about $127,000 in maintenance and spare parts per well.

Sichuan shale gas platform

72%

In high-density oil-based mud, replacing a ferrite-based separator reduced 14-30μm solids by 72% and reduced rotary steering torque fluctuation by 55%.

Huang 204H2-3 continuous trial

30天

The system ran continuously for 30 days, removing an average of 4500g of magnetic material per hour. No tripping caused by magnetic blockage of RSS tools occurred during the fourth drilling section.

After deployment at 205H54-6

70%+

Iron powder content in drilling fluid was stabilized at 100-300g/h, more than 70% lower than the traditional method, effectively slowing magnetic accumulation.

Comparison

Why effective gradient matters more than surface flux alone

Conventional separators may show surface flux above 3000Gs, yet their low gradient often captures only coarse particles above 60μm. MagBee uses a custom Halbach closed circuit to concentrate magnetic energy on the working side and create capture conditions for weakly magnetic ultra-fine particles such as 20μm hematite.
